A Time-trial with a big, big favourit: Benoît Joachim, the only professional rider to line up and number one specialist in Luxembourg for this type of race. But after the first lap, evergreen Pascal Triebel is only 8 seconds slower than him. It is his first race for Benoît after knowing that he is not selected for the Tour de France, so it was difficult for him to get back on track. But the second lap is already better, he takes 20" on Pascal Triebel who said after the line: "the second lap, especially the last climb, was too difficult for me". Note that the positions at half race are nearly exactly the same than in the end.
Report from the elite road-race:
km 0 Start is at 3 o'clock p.m. 35 riders line up for 12 laps (153 km), together with 19 Under23-riders.
1st lap Directly after the start, the riders have to face the most difficult part of the circuit: the climb of Hostert with an easier part in the beginning, a little downhill, an then the very steep final section. The race will take part on a larger course of 17,5 km (6 laps), and then on a smaller, local course of 8 km (6 more laps). The climb is to be taken each time and the repetition of it as well as the accelerations of the professionnal riders should make the race very tough.
1st lap 4 riders get away from the rest to form an early break: 3 members of Tétange (Michel Wolter, Marco Kohl and Ben Schaack) and one of Differdange (Jean-Pierre Serafini).
2nd lap The break has 3 minutes advance on the peloton with the big favourites.
2nd lap Ben Schaack was already once National elite champion: in 1995 in Dommeldange.
3rd lap Nearly 5 minutes of gap for the group of 4. In the bunch, there is no reaction and it is clear that the 3 professionnal riders (Kirchen, Schleck, Joachim) will have to do all the work.
4th lap They are beginning: under the impulse of Kim Kirchen, the gap starts to decrease.
4th lap The advance is under 2 minutes. Ben Schaack decides to react and isolates himself in the lead.
4th lap His lead is just one minute now and his former break-mates are caught.
5th lap In the climb of Hostert, Ben Schaack is caught as Benoît Joachim is placing a violent acceleration, followed by Gusty Bausch, Kim Kirchen, Frank Schleck and some others. Behind them, the damages are important.
5th lap The leading group is composed by Gusty Bausch, Kim Kirchen, Frank Schleck, Benoît Joachim, Vincenzo Centrone and Ben Schaack. There is also the espoirs-rider Andy Schleck, brother of Frank. Most important victim: Pascal Triebel who has not recovered from his fantastic time-trial of yesterday.
6th lap Schaack is dropped in the leading group. The gap of the next chasing group is over 2 minutes.
6th lap Kim Kirchen attacks on the steepest part of the climb, in front of numerous spectators cheering him. Joachim, Schleck and Centrone are able to follow, but Gusty Bausch is dropped.
7th lap Advance of the leading riders to the main groups: 4 minutes. Several riders are in between like Bausch at 30" or Schaack and Degano a little bit further down.
8th lap Under23-rider Andy Schleck is doing a lot of work in the front group, thus assuring his title. Just one more lap to go for him.
10th lap The race enters his final part. The CSC-jersey is working a lot in front. Frank Schleck knows that he is the strongest on the climb, but his chances in a sprint are low.
10th lap There it is. Frank Schleck goes away. He is pedalling very smooth and immediately opens a gap to Benoît Joachim. Kirchen is hesitating.
10th lap Kim Kirchen catches Joachim and immediately passes him to chase Schleck. This is too much for Centrone, but he has done a nice race so far.
10th lap The man from Rammeldange joins Schleck not far away from his own garden. Joachim is just behind.
10th lap The two riders of ACC Contern work well together and will make it difficult for Joachim to come back.
10th lap Joachim at 30 seconds. Centrone at 2 minutes. Gusty Bausch is still in 5th position, 5 minutes behind. Still further down, there is a group of 3 riders with Pascal Triebel, Claude Degano and Steve Fries.
11th lap The US Postal man is over a minute down now. The victory will go to one of the two riders from Contern.
12th lap In the last climb, Frank Schleck gives everything to drop Kirchen. This is his last chance to win the title. Kirchen suffers, holds on to his wheel ... and manages to come over the top of the climb with Bjarne Rijs' rider.
Finish The sprint will take place on a long, uphill line of 700 metres. Frank Schleck launches his attack, but Kim Kirchen comes around him without too much difficulty.
Finish A minute and a half later, Benoît Joachim completes the podium.
Finish Kim Kirchen will line up for the Tour de France wearing the national, red-white-blue jersey.
